San Diego, Calif. — San Diego Wave FC’s home dominance took a hit Sunday night at Snapdragon Stadium, as Angel City FC spoiled the party with a 2-0 win, snapping the league leaders back down to earth in front of the home crowd.

The result doesn’t change the big picture — the Wave still sit atop the NWSL table — but it was a rare off night for a team that had been rolling. Angel City, sitting ninth in the standings, played the role of spoiler to near perfection, striking early and making it stand up.

How It Happened

Angel City wasted little time asserting itself. In the 17th minute, Maiara Niehues found the back of the net to put the visitors ahead, catching a Wave defense that had looked steady for most of the season off guard. Godfrey — who has been one of the breakout stories of the NWSL season after being named Rookie of the Month in March — stepped up to take it, but her shot rang off the woodwork, and the golden opportunity to cut the deficit in half slipped away. It was the closest San Diego came to breaking through all night.

Both sides picked up cards over the course of the match, with the physicality ramping up in the second half as San Diego pressed for a way back into the game. Angel City, for its part, defended with discipline and organization, content to sit on its lead and let the clock work in its favor.
