Newly formed North County squad’s first tournament together ends in the final — and it’s only the beginning

For a team playing in its first tournament together, a silver medal isn’t a consolation prize. It’s a statement.

SDSC Surf’s GU19 GA Aspire squad, out of San Diego’s North County, traveled up to Orange County’s Great Park complex for the Pats Cup 2026 Girls U19 Mercurial bracket and left with something most first-year rosters only dream about: a spot in the championship match. The team went 2-2 across four games in Bracket A, outscoring opponents 5-3 in its two wins, before running into a Pateadores Soccer Club side that proved to be the tournament’s toughest out — twice.

Under first-year head coach Galilea Rubi, the group showed exactly the identity a newly assembled team hopes to establish early: quick in transition, comfortable putting the ball in the net, and unshaken by adversity. For a roster still learning to play alongside one another, that’s a foundation worth building on.

Opening Statement

The tournament couldn’t have started better. On Saturday, July 18, SDSC Surf GU19 GA Aspire opened Bracket A play with a tight 1-0 win over FLYTE SC IE’s 08G Ayala squad at OC Great Park’s Field 5 — a statement result to kick off the group’s first tournament together, and proof the team could win low-scoring, disciplined matches as well as track meets.

That composure got tested a few hours later. In the Saturday nightcap, San Diego ran into Pateadores Soccer Club’s ECNL RL G2008/09 team and were on the wrong end of a 5-2 result. It was the kind of game that can rattle a new group — but it didn’t derail the weekend.

Bouncing Back

Sunday morning brought a reset, and GA Aspire delivered. A 2-0 win over Vista Storm Soccer Club’s GU18 Elite squad at Plaza Park pushed San Diego back into bracket contention, and when the dust settled on group play, the Bracket A standings sent SDSC Surf through to the championship match — a fitting reward for a team that answered its one bad afternoon with a clean, controlled performance.

The Final

The rematch with Pateadores arrived Sunday afternoon at OC Great Park’s Field 24, and this time the Orange County club took firm control, closing out a 3-0 win to claim the Bracket A title. It was Pateadores’ second win over San Diego in three days, and the difference in the tournament — SDSC Surf was 2-0 against everyone else in the bracket, and 0-2 against the eventual champions.

Still, a final is a final. For a team playing together for the first time in tournament competition, reaching the last match of the weekend is a result that outweighs the scoreline.

What It Means

Four games, five goals scored, a runner-up finish, and a coach in Galilea Rubi who has this group playing fast, direct, positive soccer right out of the gate — that’s a strong opening chapter for SDSC Surf’s GU19 GA Aspire. The Girls Academy’s Aspire platform is built to give clubs’ second-tier teams national-caliber competition, and San Diego passed its first test of the format with a finalist finish.

The blueprint is already visible: press quickly, score in bunches when it’s flowing, grind out the low-scoring games too, and don’t blink when a tough result comes early in a tournament. If this group builds on the Pats Cup run, Pateadores now has confirmation of exactly who they’ll be seeing again down the road.
