SAN DIEGO — San Diego Wave FC (10-7-3, 33 points) couldn’t hold on to a second-half lead Friday night, settling for a 1-1 draw against expansion side Denver Summit FC (6-7-6, 24 points) in front of 13,463 fans at Snapdragon Stadium.

Before kickoff, the club honored defender Kristen McNabb, who became the first player in franchise history to reach 100 appearances with the club, a milestone she hit during San Diego’s Aug. 2 road win over the Washington Spirit.

Denver came out aggressive, pressing San Diego early. But the Wave found their footing as the half wore on. In the 27th minute, forward Ludmila nearly broke the deadlock, rounding Denver goalkeeper Abby Smith only to push her shot just wide of the frame.

The breakthrough came eight minutes later. Teenage forward Melanie Barcenas took a pass from midfielder Gia Corley on the right flank, cut inside past a pair of defenders, and buried a low strike into the bottom corner from just outside the box. It was Barcenas’s fourth goal of the season — the most by any teenager in the NWSL this year — and Corley’s fourth assist, a career high for the midfielder and the most on the Wave roster in 2026.

San Diego nearly doubled its advantage before the break when Lia Godfrey’s curling attempt was turned away by Smith.

The Wave kept creating chances early in the second half, but Denver drew level in the 58th minute. Janine Sonis whipped in a cross from the left that Yazmeen Ryan headed past San Diego keeper Sandra Paños. Barcenas answered almost immediately, ripping a shot from distance off the crossbar in the 60th minute.

The night also marked debuts for two new Wave additions. Midfielder Laila Harbert, signed from Arsenal on July 28, entered in the 72nd minute. Defender Brooklyn Courtnall, on loan from Bay FC since July 31, followed in the 83rd. Both picked up yellow cards before the final whistle, as did forward Adriana Leon, whose 90th-minute finish was waved off for offside — the closest either side would come to a winner.

San Diego finished with the edge in shots on target (5-2) and possession (55%), but couldn’t turn that edge into three points. Perle Morroni and Ludmila each reached a personal milestone of their own, notching their 50th career NWSL appearances in the draw.

The Wave stay home next Friday, Aug. 21, hosting the Utah Royals at Snapdragon Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with the match streaming live on Prime Video.
