Wave Hold Off Courage Rally, Win 2-1 at Snapdragon to Stay Hot at Home
San Diego, Calif. — Sept. 12, 2026 — San Diego Wave FC survived a late scare from North Carolina Courage star Ashley Sanchez, hanging on for a 2-1 victory at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday afternoon that pushed the Wave’s unbeaten home streak to four matches and lifted them three points clear of the Courage in the NWSL standings.
Entering the match, the two clubs were level on points, and the tension showed early. San Diego thought it had the game’s opening goal in the second minute when Melanie Barcenas buried a chance, but the goal was waved off for offside in the buildup. The setback didn’t slow the Wave down for long.

Corley Breaks Through
San Diego’s pressure paid off in the 23rd minute. Brooklyn Courtnall — making her first start in a Wave shirt after arriving from North Carolina — drove down the right flank and delivered a ball toward the back post that deflected into the path of Gia Corley. Corley finished from inside the box for her first goal of the 2026 season and a 1-0 San Diego lead.
Sandra Paños kept that edge intact right before the half, coming up with a huge double save in the 30th minute — first denying Sanchez point-blank, then reacting in a flash to smother the rebound and keep the Courage off the board heading into the break.

Barcenas Extends the Lead
The Wave put the game further out of reach in the 72nd minute, when Barcenas scored her sixth goal of the season — a mark that ties the NWSL single-season record for a teenager. It was also the eighth goal of her young career, moving her into fourth place on the league’s all-time list for goals scored by a teenager, and her second game-winner of the year. Barcenas now leads the entire NWSL in goals and goal contributions among teenage players this season.

Courage Push Back Late
North Carolina wasn’t finished. In the 82nd minute, Sanchez — who came into the weekend chasing the NWSL’s single-season scoring record — curled a shot into the top corner off an assist from Shinomi Koyama to cut the deficit to 2-1 and set up a nervy final stretch at Snapdragon. It was Sanchez’s 19th goal of the season, leaving her one shy of the league record. San Diego’s defense settled in from there, closing out the win despite a flurry of late Courage corners and shots.
