Oceanside opened its 2026 season with a statement, riding a dominant offensive line and a big night from its backfield to a 44-29 win over No. 2-ranked Granite Hills at John Carroll Stadium on Friday, Aug. 21.

The victory flips the script from a year ago, when the Pirates opened last season with a 45-29 loss to the same Eagles squad. It’s Oceanside’s first win in the series, pushing the all-time record to 1-3.

Trenches Set the Tone

Senior offensive lineman Lincoln Mageo, a University of Michigan commit, had told Pacific Sports Media before the season that this Oceanside team’s identity runs through its offensive line. Friday night backed that up. The Pirates controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, building a commanding 30-7 halftime lead over a Granite Hills program that came in ranked No. 2 in the county — while Oceanside sat at No. 8.

Mageo said afterward that nobody in the Pirates’ locker room was surprised by the result, framing it as proof of an identity built in the trenches rather than a breakout moment. Asked about outside chatter questioning whether Oceanside was “back,” he pushed back, arguing the program never went anywhere.

Letuli Powers the Ground Game

Running back Neke Letuli was the workhorse, rushing for 153 yards and three touchdowns on scoring runs of 11, 8 and 16 yards. Behind Mageo and the rest of the offensive front, Letuli found room to churn out chunk plays and control the clock against a ranked opponent.

Barquinero-Mahoney Connection

Quarterback Anthony Barquinero complemented the ground attack through the air, completing 11 of 22 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown, with one interception. Wide receiver Darien Mahoney was his top target, hauling in six catches for 122 yards and a touchdown — a 20.3-yard average per reception that stretched the Granite Hills defense and opened up room underneath for the run game.

Defense Delivers Up Front, Too

The Pirates’ pressure wasn’t limited to the offensive side of the ball. Defensive lineman Jameson Garrison recorded three sacks, helping Oceanside’s front seven disrupt Granite Hills’ rhythm and protect the second-half cushion built in the opening two quarters.

The Bigger Picture

Beating a team ranked No. 2 in the county — and doing it as a significant underdog on paper — is the kind of early-season result that reshapes expectations. For Mageo and the rest of the Pirates, the message was less about a surprising turnaround and more about validation of a standard they say has been there all along.

Oceanside will look to carry the momentum from its trench-first identity into the rest of a season that now opens with a signature win over a top-tier county opponent.
